In Baptism, we recognize God’s claim on our lives. In Confirmation, students have an opportunity to claim the relationship God freely offers for them.
Confirmation is a class for students sixth grade and up, who are interested in becoming a member of the church. The class teaches the students important aspects of one's faith: baptism, Holy Communion, Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, the history of the Christian church, and the history of the United Methodist Church. The class is designed to prepare the students to answer the all-important question:
"Do you confess Jesus Christ as your Savior,
put your whole trust in His grace,
and promise to serve Him as your Lord,
in union with the church which Christ
has opened to people of all ages, nations, and races?"
Confirmation at Covenant
Covenant’s confirmation experience for sixth graders is geared toward nurturing their maturation as teens and as growing Christian disciples. An emphasis is placed on preparing the students to “claim the name” Christian. The class is meant to be both informational and transformational through a series of lessons, events, outings and retreats all aimed at helping the student make a meaningful profession of faith in Christ.
Beginning each fall (with the new school year), we like to make the confirmation curriculum and experience a year-long adventure. Outings include an annual retreat to Lake Junaluska, North Carolina, a Saturday workshop called “The Bishop’s Confirmation Rally”, as well as a hands-on servant ministry experience. Each student is assigned a mentor from the congregation who serves as a special congregational friend and sponsor throughout the year. At the close of the confirmation experience, a banquet is held for students, parents and mentors. The following Sunday is Confirmation Sunday, which is usually celebrated on Pentecost (in late May). A church-wide reception honoring the class follows this service.
